AFTB Levels I, II, III Course Descriptions
Level I
Level 1 courses are targeted toward people new to the Army.
1.01 Expectations/Impact of the Mission
This course explores expectations family members have of the
Army and the impact of the Army mission on family life. It
will also provide tips to assist in developing realistic expectations.
1.02 Military Acronyms and Terms
This course introduces many of the military acronyms and terms
most frequently used as well as the military phonetic alphabet
and military time.
1.03 The Chain of Command
This course explains the military chain of command through the
explanat ion of rank, discussing the various branches of the
Army, and exploring the Army’s organizational structure.
1.04 Introduction to Military Customs and Courtesies
This course will review some of the customs and courtesies that
are basic to the day-to-day functioning of the military and
to the social aspects of the military lifestyle.
1.05 Basic Military Benefits and Entitlements
This course introduces the basic benefits and entitlements received
by military personnel.
1.06 Introduction to Military and Civilian Community Resources
This course provides an overview of the resources in both the
military and civilian communities.
1.07 Introduction to Family Readiness Groups
This course provides an introduction to the mission, structure
and benefits of Family Readiness Groups (FRGs). FRGs help family
members to develop a more positive attitude toward themselves,
the unit, the deployment and the Army.
1.08 Supporting Your Child’s Education
This course reinforces the importance of parental involvement
in a child’s education. It also provides an overview
of the School Liaison Officer’s (SLO) role to assist
Army families in obtaining a good educational experience for
their children, particularly when they are transitioning from
school to school.
1.09 Introduction to Family Financial Readiness
This course introduces basic money management and financial planning
techniques. It illustrates the advantages and techniques of
creating a family financial plan, how to save wisely, and information
on credit. It defines savings and investment and reinforces
the importance of planning for the future.
1.10 Basic Problem Solving
This course describes and provides an opportunity to practice
a six-step problem solving process to help determine solutions
to various real-life scenarios.

Level II
Level II courses are targeted toward emerging
leaders within the Army community.
2.1 Communication
This class discusses various types of communication and assesses the student’s ability to effectively communicate with others. The students will explore barriers to communication and develop strategies to improve their communication skills.
2.2 Personal Time Management
This class helps students assess personal time management skills and prioritize activities using a time management tool.
2.3 Stress Management
This class defines stress and identifies symptoms and sources of stress. Through self-assessment, students will determine how they manage personal stress, and discuss stress management techniques.
2.4 Acknowledging Change
This class will define change, discuss the four phases of change, and examine strategies to overcome the tendency to resist change.
2.5 Exploring Personality Traits
The class will allow the students to identify their primary personality tendencies (traits) and to discover more effective ways to interact with others.
2.6 Enhancing Personal Relationships
This class will discuss how to develop and maintain healthy personal relationships. The students will learn the importance of self-confidence when meeting new people and the benefits of being a supportive group member.
2.7 Team Dynamics
This class discusses the stages of group development and how various roles and interpersonal styles impact the success of a team.
2.8 Personal Conflict Management
This class defines conflict and conflict management and explores how individuals handle conflict differently. The students will determine how conflict affects relationships, both working and personal, and examine methods to productively manage conflict.
2.9 Creative Problem Solving
This class explores different methods of creative problem solving. These methods will enable the students to generate effective solutions to their everyday problems.
2.10 Traditions, Customs, Courtesies and Protocol
This class will cover traditions, customs, courtesies and protocol to assist the students in feeling more comfortable with the social and official aspects of the military lifestyle.
2.11 Crisis, Coping and Grieving
This class defines crisis and discusses the grieving process. Students will be introduced to coping strategies for preparing and dealing with personal crisis and for helping other people who are experiencing crisis.
2.12 The Volunteer Experience
This class will examine the importance of volunteerism within military and civilian communities as well as why people choose to volunteer. It also will explore the benefits of volunteering to both the volunteer and the community organizations.
2.13 Family Readiness Groups and the Deployment Cycle
This class describes the structure of Family Readiness Groups (FRGs) and how its members may contribute to its success. It also will examine how an FRG can assist family members during deployment cycles.
2.14 Introduction to Leadership
This class explores leadership and the difference between leader and follower. The students will discuss characteristics associated with effective leaders and discover important principles of leadership.

Level III
Level III courses offer training to enhance the professional
growth and leadership development opportunities of family members,
especially
those who might assume leadership roles within the community
and the unit.
3.01.1 Listening Shills
This lesson develops personal communication and listening skills
by focusing on listening behaviors.
3.01.2 Building Self-Esteem
Students learn how to empower themselves and gain a higher self-worth.
Students will also learn how to take care of themselves first
so they can help others.
3.01.3 Personality Traits
Course instruction describes methods of determining various personality
traits and how to benefit effectively from those traits.
3.02.1 Motivating Factors Class
Provides instruction on various motivating factors that affect
individuals. Exercises are based on Maslow’s “Hierarchy
of Needs.”
3.02.2 Leadership Skills
Classroom instruction examines the characteristics of strong
leadership. Students undertake case studies and use the leadership
style inventor to dissect their own approaches to leadership,
featuring case studies and the Leadership Style Inventory.
3.02.3 Building a Cohesive Team
From the instruction given in this class, students learn how
to build cohesive teams by capitalizing on the uniqueness of
each member. Exercises in class demonstrate the methods used
to encourage members to work together.
3.02.4 Leader Roles
Course instruction describes successful ways to fulfill leader
roles. These roles include advisor, mentor and coach.
3.02.5 Group Conflict Management
Classroom instruction explores managing conflict within a group
by focusing on the objective, the audience, four styles of
conflict, available resources, necessary preparations and the
after-action process.
3.02.6 Advanced Problem Solving
Techniques for Leaders Course focuses on personal application
of lesions learned using the Experiential Learning Model. It
also explores problem-solving options (such as problem versus
solution, vertical versus lateral thinking, brainstorming,
group think and so forth).
3.03.1 How to Develop Presentations
In this class, students learn how to develop presentations.
3.03.2 How to Plan and Conduct a Workshop
Class members receive instruction on how to plan and conduct
a successful workshop. Lesson content focuses on the objective,
the audience, the five elements of methodology, available resources,
necessary preparation and after-action procedures.
3.04.1 Understanding the Organization of the Total Army
Course presents an overview of the organization of the Army.
Classroom instruction focuses on the Army’s relationship
to the Total Force Structure.
3.04.2 Political Issues and the Army
Class members receive instruction intended to heighten their
awareness of the sensitivity of political issues and of their
impact on the local community, as well as the military community.
The course also addresses the role of the military in the process.
3.04.3 Effective Public/Media Relations
Course instruction explores successful techniques to use when
dealing with the media or local agencies, particularly during
a deployment or tour of duty in a foreign country.

I or any of the Individual 43 modules we teach can be brought
to you. We ask that you make your request two weeks in advance.
Any Unit or Organization of 5 or more is welcome to call for
a reservation. Need promotion points? Soldiers can earn up to
four promotion points for 40 hours of classroom instruction in
