ARCHERY WITH ART

Not a man to brag, one would never know Art Petit is a Sunshine Games Gold medal recipient with over twenty years experience in archery, placing second in the Senior Olympics. In addition to this amazing accomplishment, Mr. Petit has competed in and won numerous tournaments over the course of his career. For the past two years, Ft. Campbell’s Hunting and Fishing Unit has had the privilege of having Mr. Petit as the archery instructor. Although archery is quickly becoming a competitive sport, it is still one in which the whole family can participate and now is the time to take advantage of having such an accomplished instructor here at Ft. Campbell.

Eager to advance his career in Outdoor Recreation, Mr. Petit’s goal is to pass on his knowledge and skills to the younger generation. Despite his many victories, he says “My most memorable accomplishment is assisting ten Boy Scouts in receiving their merit badges.”

Mr. Petit looks forward to instructing adults in archery, but he is especially excited to interest youth in the sport. While it takes a lot of work and time dedication, he promotes that archery is a sport that can help youth in all aspects of life, including attention span, discipline and grades in school. Currently, Mr. Petit is working with the Montgomery County School System to bring archery into the schools. After all, as he puts it, “The younger generation is what it is all about.”

Although, archery is a family sport that most members can participate in, it is not encouraged for kids under nine to participate. However, with the right supervision and training anyone can be successful. Courses are offered in beginner through advanced levels, as well as one on one instruction. For those who are already into archery and like to compete, tournament season will resume in February. It is never too early to start practicing now as competitors will come from all over to participate.

For information on getting started in archery or to take your archery skills to the next level, call Ft. Campbell’s Hunting and Fishing Unit at 798-2175.
